Our younger patients have often asked if chiropractic care is safe and effective for their aging parents or friends. Many of our seniors suffer from degenerative joint disease, lower back pain, neck pain as well as chronic pain. A 2016 Medicare study published in Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that patients who used only chiropractic care during their lower back pain episodes had lower overall costs of care, shorter episodes, and lower cost of care per episode day than patients in the other treatment groups. Further, costs of care for the episode and per episode day were lower for patients who used a combination of CMT and conventional medical care than for patients who did not use any CMT. These findings support initial CMT use in the treatment of, and possibly broader chiropractic management of chronic LBP patients.
This study brings to light, not only the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for patients over the age of 65 but also stresses the importance of allopathic physicians (MDs) referring these patients to a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) for lower back pain. Spinal manipulation, done by a DC is both safe and effective for patients of all age. DCs are also educated and trained in appropriately diagnosing a myriad of health conditions to determine the appropriateness of chiropractic care for specific conditions or when a referral to another specialist might be appropriate.
Doctors of Chiropractic also tailor the specific type of spinal manipulation, therapeutic exercise and soft tissue mobilization for senior patients. In some cases high velocity, low amplitude thrusts are appropriate, for others gentle mobilization or low force technics are best. Either way, our senior citizens will receive the best in spinal care.
