Several years ago I was asked to do a lecture for the Federal Way School District on backpack safety. The size, weight and configuration of a student’s backpack had become a major concern of parents, teachers and administrators. I was happy to oblige and promptly put together a lecture addressing the appropriate weight for children of different sizes and ages, the qualities of the back pack as well as the proper way to pack it. The lecture was well received and I felt the information was helpful to the audience.
What surprised me was the school administrator who approached me after the lecture and informed me that the lack of backpacks and school supplies was a much bigger problem than the quality of them in the Federal Way District. I had been practicing in Federal Way since 1984 and always perceived it as a solid middle class community. The more I learned, the more I realized that we had an important job to do. According to the U.S. Census, between the years of 2000 and 2010, the percentage of children living in poverty increased by nearly a third, as more poor students make their way back to school, they have to grapple with the typical anxieties related to bullying and math homework, and how they will fit in if they can’t afford new clothes or school supplies.
That year we started what has now become a tradition at Northwest Wellness, an Annual Backpack and School Supply drive for the entire month of August. We ask patients, their friends and families to donate school supplies, backpacks or both and in return we provide any necessary treatment. As our practice has grown into an integrated wellness clinic we can now also offer acupuncture, naturopathic care, personal training, and massage as well as chiropractic care. We have many teachers, parents and school administrators who happily contribute each year and we are warmly received with our donations by the Federal Way School District.
