Why Does My Back Hurt?

There are obvious things that can cause back pain; slips, falls, sports or lifting injuries and motor vehicle accidents.  However, many individuals suffer from lower back pain, even in the absence of trauma or injury.  What could be the cause?

The spinal column is made up of 24 moveable bones called vertebra.  Between each of the vertebra are cushions know as a disc.  These vertebra are held together by ligaments and moved through muscles and tendons.  The spinal column is a protective mechanism for the delicate spinal cord.  In order for the body to function properly, nerves from the spinal cord travel to the rest of the body through spaces between the vertebra known as intervertebral foramina.  It’s a great system when everything works well, however if muscles get weak, discs degenerate or vertebra misalign then the pain may be the result.

The following are common causes of lower back pain:

·         Excessive sitting

·         Lack of exercise

·         Obesity

·         Improper lifting

·         Injury/trauma

·         Muscle imbalances

·         Chronic inflammation

·         Poor Posture

If you suffer from lower back pain, it is important to take a Holistic approach to address the possible causes.  Spinal manipulation is the single most effective treatment for lower back pain; however supportive exercise, stretching, nutrition and proper posture are important to rehabilitate the spine and prevent future reoccurrences.
