Chiropractic Care for Insomnia

Most of us once in a while suffer from a night of restless sleep. We can push through and function just fine after just a night or two of restless sleep. There are some people with a more serious sleeping condition known as insomnia. Insomnia can range from lying awake for hours with a just a few hours of shut eye or waking up in the middle of the night and difficulty going back to asleep.  As a result, we suffer from excessive fatigue, poor concentration, and more illnesses. Insomnia can occur because of a variety of reasons.

Some common reasons include high levels of stress, anxiety, pain, certain medications, or sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the breathing is obstructed during sleep, which causes a pause in breathing and an awakening sensation by the person sleeping. The symptoms may include snoring, waking up gasping for air or grogginess the next day.

A recent paper published in the Journal of Sleep Medicine & Disorders suggests that insomnia can also be caused from chemical interactions in the brain resulting from subluxations. When there is built up tension throughout the spine, the nervous system does not relax enough to allow a comfortable night’s sleep. A high velocity, low amplitude adjustment to the areas of joint dysfunction will immediately decrease the pain and induce muscle relaxation. This will allow the body to relax more for a more comfortable sleep.

Basically, that means that the pain and tension built up in the spine may be released after an adjustment. The more comfortable the body is, the easier it is to relax and sleep. Chiropractors focus on the spine, correcting any misalignments that are present and boosting the spine’s overall health. Chiropractic care also enhances the body’s central nervous system, which is a key player in allowing efficient function of the body. The more efficient your body is, the easier it is for you to wind down and fall asleep.
