I know everyone has that one person they know that is the Eeyore in the group. There are people who seem to just drain the energy from the room. The ones who can take a beautiful, sunny day and turn it into a rain storm. We all seem to know at least one person like that. Or even worse, it may be YOU!
LIFE IS NOT EASY. Some people have very difficult circumstances and trials while others seem to breeze through life unscathed. Some people are born into a great situation while others have a tough fight from the beginning. Regardless of what life hands you, your reaction to it can make or break you. One way to improve both your emotional and physical health is laughter. Laughter is a great way to help improve physical, hormonal and mental/emotional well-being.
Have you ever laughed so hard that your abs hurt? Laughter is a physical activity that not only helps to strengthen the core, but also gives the heart a good workout. Laughter allows for that physical and emotional release where you just let yourself go. It is hard to feel sad after you have a good hearty laugh.
Laughter is a good distractor from negative emotions such as anger, guilt, or stress. Not only does it help distract us from the negatives in our lives, but it also connects us with others. When someone laughs, you can’t help but laugh along with them. Laughter (and joy for that matter) is contagious. It helps to shift perspective from the negative in life to the positive.
Finally, laughter helps to reduce the levels of stress hormones (including cortisol, the fat-storing hormone) while increasing the levels of health-enhancing hormones such as endorphins. It can also boost the immune system by increasing production of antibody-producing cells in the body.
That being said, find humor in your life. Whether it is watching a funny movie, having a night with friends, or just laughing about past situations in your life, make laughter a priority. It is cheap, easy, and can turn an Eeyore mentality into a sunny day.
