Every year, our office does a backpack drive to benefit the local schools. People bring in supplies and backpacks and they get their choice of certain services that we offer. While our office’s school supply collection only scratches the surface of the need in the area, it clearly shows that such a small gesture by those donating the supplies can have such a profound effect on those receiving the donation. At the end of the month when we turn in those backpacks to the district office, they go so quickly it is unbelievable.
For families who struggle to get by on a day to day basis, back to school time can be very stressful. Even the smallest donation to an individual or a local district helps to provide children with the school supplies to help them be successful in school without the concern of being unprepared for class. The need is so great and the reward is even greater when kids and families have the support from the local community..
What comes to mind is the poem about the starfish on the beach.
One day an old man was walking down the beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As the old man approached the young man, he asked, "Why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The old man exclaimed, "But there must be thousands of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said," It makes a difference to this one!"
