December: National Impaired Driving Prevention

The endless stream of holiday parties is here. Festivities with family, friends, and co-workers often include things like delicious appetizers, homemade pies, and alcoholic beverages. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the month of December in 2010, on average 25 people are killed by drunk drivers in motor vehicle accidents per day. December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

Holiday cocktails, seasonal brews and wines can be fun in moderation. A word of caution when having a massage and going out for drinks in the same day. One of the benefits of massage is increased circulation, which can influence by lowering tolerances and how the body processes toxins. Another benefit of massage is the release of toxins that are trapped in soft tissues, and adding things like alcohol can be too much for the body to process. Massage also lowers blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels, making substances like alcohol to easily affect your senses.

Please know your limits. If you have had too much drink, call an Uber or Lyft. Plan ahead and have a designated driver or a place to stay. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text and drive. Happy Holidays everyone and be safe.
