The opioid crisis

If you listen to the news at all recently you probably have heard the words “opioid crisis”. But how did it happen, what does this mean, and what is being done about it? I will give you the basics and for more information, I encourage you to visit the attached website.

·         Opioids are a class of drugs that include heroin, synthetically manufactured fentanyl, and prescription drugs like Vicodin, Oxycontin, morphine, codeine, and others

·         In the 1990s opioid prescriptions increased when pharmaceutical companies assured the medical community that use of opioids for pain relief is not addictive

·         Addiction to these prescription opioids soared and led to misuse and/or heroin addictions

·         The CDC estimates the yearly cost of opioid misuse in the US is in the billions of dollars

·         The US Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) and National Institute of Health (NIH) have come up with a strategy to manage the opioid crises

-      Safe, effective ways to manage chronic pain (INCLUDING CHIROPRACTIC AND MASSAGE)

-      New medications

-      Improved overdose interventions

What does this mean? Main stream medicine is looking for alternatives to opioids for chronic pain patients and both chiropractic and massage fit right in. Here at Northwest Wellness, we evaluate and treat for acute and chronic pain. We have chiropractic, massage, rehabilitative exercise, acupuncture, and naturopaths to treat the whole patient, and not just the pain. Call today at 253-927-0660
