Stress is a natural part of life. There are good stresses and bad stresses in life and the effects that stresses have on the body are largely determined by how much stress is present and how one deals with it, if they do at all. For some people, curling up with a good book in front of the fire is their idea of relaxing and relieving stress. For others, going to the gym to lift or workout is their preferred method. Regardless of how, an outlet is very important to maintain optimum (or even just functional) physical, psychological, and emotional health.
For me, I love participating in sporting events. I grew up playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball and love both watching and playing sports. Several years back I chose to give up full contact sports such as basketball and soccer but currently, I play on a softball team. The games and occasional practices give me the opportunity to release built up stress energy, compete, and be a part of a team. Even if I have had a long, tiring day, I relish the opportunity to go out and play. It helps me feel energized and allows me to cope better with life’s stresses.
Whatever it is that you prefer to help relieve stress, do it. Take the time to take care of yourself. So many people focus on taking care of others and they find themselves so run down and worn out that doing that becomes too challenging. Take care of yourself. You will always have your body so treat it well.
