Chiropractic At Northwest Wellness

Northwest Wellness was originally founded as a chiropractic center in 1987 by Dr. Lorri Nichols.  Over the past twenty-nine years we have expanded to become a multidisciplinary integrated health care facility which now provides chiropractic, primary care, massage therapy, naturopathy, corrective exercise, acupuncture and nutrition.  Chiropractic care, however, remains at the core of our practice.

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic services are used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.  Currently we have two Doctors of Chiropractic at Northwest Wellness.  Dr. Lorri Nichols remains clinic director while Dr. Jolene Harlow joined our clinical staff in 2008.  Dr. Nichols has been practicing in Federal Way, Washington since 1984.  Originally from Pennsylvania, she is a cum laude graduate of Sherman College in Spartanburg, SC.  Dr. Harlow is a native of the Northwest and graduated Magna Cum Laude and valedictorian of her class from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in 2007.

Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs), often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians, practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained in spinal manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic/rehabilitative exercises and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. DCs assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriateChiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other health care providers.

One of the most common and well known therapeutic procedures performed by doctors of chiropractic is spinal manipulation (sometimes referred to as a "chiropractic adjustment"). The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile, or restricted in their movement, as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for an individual. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal.

Although the majority of patients have entered our clinic for chiropractic care, they now have the opportunity to meet all of their health care needs in one setting with our multi-disciplinary approach.  We are pleased to provide this level of integrated care to the Federal Way Community.
