Life has a tendency to not always go as planned. And we're grateful for when it does! Which is why it is understandable that important things like taking care of yourself tend to be low on the list of priorities. In my personal and professional experience you have to be greedy with your own private time. While attending massage school one of the biggest pieces of advice that I felt was not just applicable to me but for everyone, is taking time for yourself and defending that time. It is sometimes all too easy to spread yourself thin with work, family, and a social life.
Massage sessions are your time. Time to let another person physically help you relax and forget the other million things going on. If that doesn't sound enticing enough here are my top 10 benefits of massage:
Boost your immune system
Relaxation; which in turn improves quality of sleep
Reduce muscle tension and stiffness
Increase range of motion
Ease symptoms of depression
Reduce occurrence of injuries (especially athletes)
Relieve headaches and migraines
Reduce chronic pain
Lower blood pressure
While there rare instances when massage is not recommended or may need modifications (i.e. severe open wounds or burns, pregnancy, high blood pressure) there are still many benefits in receiving consistent treatment work. I recommend, in general, that individuals should receive a massage at the very least once a month. Twice a month is a great plan and will allow the benefits of massage to last longer.
