As the air turns cool and the days become rain soaked, we in the Pacific Northwest know that the holiday season is just around the corner. This does not have to mean inevitable weight gain and uncontrollable fatigue. Here are 4 ways to help stay fit through the holidays (and really any other time of year as well). 1. Carry a healthy snack around with you: When you plan ahead and have something on hand, you are less likely to make that quick trip to the fast food restaurant or sneak that high calorie, spur of the moment snack. 2. Eat something healthy before going to the food-centered holiday parties: If you have filled up on healthier foods, you are less likely to indulge in the typically unhealthy holiday foods. On the same note, when attending parties, go for the veggie platter first. 3. Make exercise a priority: With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, exercise takes a back burner. Just sneaking in 30 minutes of walking a day helps to burn calories and increase the metabolism. If you can bear fighting the crowds, get your exercise by walking around shopping. Might as well kill two birds with one stone. A few other suggestions include hot yoga, exercise videos, and dancing for those who need indoor activities in the harsh winter weather. 4. Hang out with fit friends: Learn what they do to stay fit. Mimic their exercise and eating habits. Many people don’t just have a naturally high metabolism; they actually work for it. If they fail to maintain their good habits, they will gain weight just like everyone else.
